My Grandpa's Story

Filiberto Lavarreda Ovando is my grandpa. He was born in Tumbor San Marcos, Guatemala in the year 1938. He was a mix of German and Spanish.  Growing up he was one of eight brothers in his family. From what is known about his childhood he was part of a very loving, caring, united family and adored by everyone. Something special about my grandpa and his family is his last name Lavarreda because only one family shares this last name meaning anyone with this last name is related.

From stories I heard my grandpa was very friendly and helpful. A quality of my grandpa that was known was that he was an honest man always true to his word. Later on in his life was a caring father with a strict attitude at times. His body type wasn’t anything special he was average height maybe 5’6” around there with white skin. Another story I heard of my grandpa was he like to eat exotic things like snakes could be an example. Somehow even with eating exotic things he was said to be a very healthy man never got sick. Besides eating exotic things he also liked riding horses, swimming, sports, and was really into classic cars. Education wise there isn’t much known besides that he graduated high school with honors then went to college and also got diplomas for having excellent writing.

Once my grandpa got older he was drafted into the army of Guatemala at eighteen but this wasn’t because he wanted to back then it was forced upon all 18 year old males to be drafted. Even though he was drafted he was never put in action from what is known he served his time and got out. Around this time was when the Civil War of Guatemala was going on and that lasted for 30 years. Unfortunately my  grandpa didn’t live past the civil war. During this time it was difficult to find a job but when he did he worked for the government. In the department of making sure money was collected and that it got to its destination. He also manage a finca which from what I was told translate to a ranch owned by the government. In this time he was approached by people who wanted to steal money from the government. He was offered to help them but my grandpa refused. Even though he refused he said he wouldn’t speak a word of this to anybody he just didn’t want a part of it but that wasn’t enough and he knew it. Once he had the feeling something bad was going to happen he informed my grandma about the situation so she would know he could possibly be killed. Sadly that’s what happened he was killed and when his body was found he was marked as unknown pretty much meaning no one knew who he was. Eventually my grandma saw this on the news and went to recover the body to give my grandpa a proper burial in his hometown where he was born. He died at the age of twenty six but in that time he had three daughters with my grandma. Also had two affairs that ended up giving him another daughter and son my grandpa was known to be a womanizer. Shortly before he died in regards to the civil war of Guatemala in “1970 - Military-backed Carlos Arana was elected president, and he immediately placed the country under a state of siege, giving the military more control over civilians. For the next decade, a series of military-dominated governments escalated violence against guerilla groups and indigenous communities”(PBS). Another thing my grandpa lived past was the even in “1966 - Civilian rule restored; Cesar Mendez elected president”(BBC). Even though my grandpa died young he still lived in a time of major events for Guatemala.

Besides my grandpa being a womanizer and dying at a very young age I believe he was a great person at heart who I wish I would have had the pleasure to meet I don’t believe my grandpa deserved the fate he got  but regardless may grandpa’s soul continue to rest in peace.

The stories that my dad told me was that he was a really good soccer player that it was hard to mark him because he was really quick when he get mark by a older guy they will be talking shit to him but dad will start laughing and when my dad got the ball the guy that marked him lost track of my dad and when he turn around he was already in front of him and he couldn’t stop because every time my dad had the ball it will be a goal. The other story that I heard was when he will be practicing for soccer that they will be practicing in the hot sun one of their workouts was that they had to carry somebody on their backs going up and down the bleachers and then after they will touch the ball but when the practice was over they will leave with bruises and cuts on their legs or body because the field was just dirt and rocks. He also told me he had the chance to go professional but he didn’t go because he want to make a better life for himself so he came to the united states to make a better life himself. The united didn’t recognized Guatemala as political refuges. Some of the of Guatemalan people will migrant to Canada to make their life. “Despite the threat of deportation, the difficulty of the trip to the Untied states, and problems here as undocumented persons, Guatemalans have continued to arrive in the Untied States are one if the fastest growing American immigrant groups.” This quote explains that people from Guatemala are not scared to come to the Untied States because they’re not afraid to get deported or how hard the trip to the untied states is and they don’t care if they don’t have documents they just want to come the Untied States to make a better life of themselves.

Abuelo Juan

My grandfather’s name was Juan Zepeda, and he was a police commander in El Salvador in the 80’s. During that time, a rebel group called the FMLN was terrorizing the people of El Salvador. The rebel group claims they were trying to fight against the government but they would also kill innocent people.

One day my grandpa was out patrolling in a small pueblo and word came in that the rebel force was going to go through that little city. He was in full uniform, and without his partner so he knew he was going to stick out like a sore thumb. If he had got caught, he would have been tortured, and killed. So he went into a random house and asked the lady that lived there to let him borrow some clothes. Since they were evacuating everyone from the pueblo, he wore woman’s clothing and carried someone’s baby to make it seem that he was a girl. He passed through without any trouble and went home. Then in the headlines this appeared: ”Massacre at El Mozote left more than 1,000 civilians dead” (Kane).

My grandmother would have to hide my grandfather’s uniform on top of the roof because if the government or the rebels found it, they would kill everyone in the house. This quote says: “The, government-supported military, targeted anyone they suspected of supporting social and economic reform” (kane). The government couldn’t trust anyone because there would be rebels dressing up like governor soldiers for surprise attacks. So when my grandfather was out on patrol, my grandmother had to take care of the house. She was a strong lady, and protected the house when my grandpa wasn’t there.

The funny thing is that my mom married my dad who ended up finding out that my dads father was in the FMLN. My grandpa from my father’s side would make meetings for the rebel’s forces in secret places.

Fortunate Son

Fortunate Son
My Uncle , Fransisco Javier Covarruvias , had a difficult childhood but a very successful future.  Born in 1951 in Autlan , Jalisco; he was The 3rd child of Guadalupe Covarruvias and Javier Covarruvias.  While his mother was a soft spoken and kind, his father was strict, belting him for any small “misdoing.”

Though His Father was strict, my uncle was glad he was. By The age of 7, he worked selling news papers in down town Autlan.  At the age of 14 he worked with his father in the trucking business. Having already learned to drive at 13 he saw this as a “Piece of cake”. He didn’t complain, as he drove across country around Mexico. He was having fun and had always dreamt of seeing Mexico further down south.  At 16 he graduated from high school and he left to the U.S. for college .After arriving  in the U.S, he applied for citizenship or a green card while attending college.  After 4 weeks in The U.S he was picked up by the U.S. Army after a racist classmate reported him.  He was told to join the army or go to jail for entering illegally to the U.S. He saw this as a risky opportunity to get citizenship and agreed to join the army. Unfortunately, he didn’t know that the Vietnam war was still on. After 6 weeks of boot camp he was shipped to Hawaii, then Okinawa , and finally Saigon Air base or Tan Son Nhut Air base . His first sight of combat was on May 3 , 1969 ,helping the Americans win “Operation: Speedy Express”. He was on a river boat patrolling around while controlling a M60 Turret on the Boat.  Six hours into patrol his boat was ambushed.  While trying to shoot at the Vietcong his M60 jammed.  He got out of his turret to get an M16 to shoot at the Vietcong , but was shot in the thigh with a 7.62 AK round.  After The Vietcong retreated back to the jungle his crew quickly drove the boat back to camp .He was hospitalized for about a month when he was sent back to Vietnam.

After being in Okinawa for a month he was assigned as a door Gunner for a Hue helicopter of the M.A.G 1st Marine’s Aircraft Wing.  He would fly with the troops, but would not go down . After the Vietnam war ended he went back to Mexico ,to help his parents with money ,and worked again with his Dad .In 1974 he went partying and drinking and arrived home tired and drunk . Unaware that he had to work in half an hour, his Dad woke him up to get ready to work. They got in the truck and only drove a few miles before my uncle drove the truck off a cliff. Both of them broke some ribs, his dad has a plastic cap in his skull, and my uncle has a metal rod in as a Back.  After 10 Years of trucking my uncle came back to the U.S and got himself a job making $30 an hour. He now lives in Bloomington, California.

Full of Dreams

Full of Dreams

[Verse 1:]
Some dream for fancy stuff, it gets rough.
It won’t just appear, Hello I’m up here.
Remembering the times when I was down they laughed.
I almost drown on my feelings, getting clowned,
Felt like I was about to fly and hit the ceiling, not kidding.
Thinking you couldn’t hear me, but you manage to steer.
I’ll be real, stay still if you fall pick yourself up from the dust
You full of dreams.

[Chorus:]
We all have dreams, full of dreams.
We all have dreams, yeah, you’re full of dreams.
We all have dreams, I’m full of dreams.
We all have dreams, we full of dreams.

[Verse 2:]
My dream is the mic, let me grab it,
No you can’t have it right now; I’m sky high, so pay attention to the words that I write
Hold on tight for this long ride.
We afraid to lose the people we love it hurts, it rains, it leaves a stain
Don’t run away its ok things change.
He will always be here for you, no matter what you go through
And my dad left when I was three, still love em, though forgave em
He was with the ladies well that’s what my mom told me
Thinking I was going crazy, so I clear my mind and keep myself steady, full of dreams
My name is P.L.A.P, this comes from the heart.

[Bridge:]
Be yourself; be proud of that, one of a kind,
Too hard to find, don’t worry you’ll be fine
Yeah, full of dreams, you and me if you work hard you can achieve anything
Trust, and just have faith things will be ok, but remember what the word says.
I know you struggle all the time, stay strong, and when you feel you can’t make it
You know you wrong, Full of dreams, Thankful for the friends that I have
And I’m glad for the dreams that came to me, grateful to see my little brothers be strong
Yeah, be strong, yeah be, be, be strong

[Chorus:]
We all have dreams, full of dreams
We all have dreams, yeah, you’re full of dreams
We all have dreams, I’m full of dreams
We all have dreams, we full of dreams

[Verse 3:]
You know we full of dreams, I know you’re full of dreams don’t give up on these things
You can achieve if you believe stop and think positive, you’ll feel relieved yeah that’s it
I feel great, I don’t hate, we can relate, I don’t have much food on my plate
But blessed to say, so grateful I can rap this song and smile
Never felt this way, so positive, yeah, so positive

[Chorus:]
We all have dreams, full of dreams
We all have dreams, yeah, you’re full of dreams
We all have dreams, I’m full of dreams
We all have dreams, we full of dreams

We are, full of dreams, don’t give up on yourself
We are, full of dreams, so don’t give up on yourself.
