My Great Grandfather's Story

My Great Grandfather's Story

My great grandpa died at the age of 67 of diabetes.  When he was around his 20s he was forced to join the Mexican army with his brother he was forced by his dad. He didn’t want to but he didn’t have a choice. In the 1910 his first fight began in the Mexican revolution. The Mexican revolution started because there was a huge disagreement of the dictatorship. They were about to shoot my great grandpa but luckily the enemy missed. When he saw a bullet flying thru the air and it was about to touch his brother he didn’t think it twice. He “flew” to save his brother’s life and the bullet went thru his leg. They took him to the emergency room and they amputated his leg. At first he couldn’t believe he didn’t have a leg but then he didn’t care because it was worth saving his brother. They just had to send him home.
The Mexican Revolution was a major armed struggle that started in 1910, with an uprising led by Francisco I Madero against longtime autocrat Porifrio Diaz, and lasted for the better part of two decades until around 1929. The Revolution was characterized by several socialist, liberal, anarchist, populist, and agrarian movements. Over time the Revolution changed from a revolt against the established order to a multi-sided civil war. This armed conflict is often categorized as the most important sociopolitical event in Mexico and one of the greatest upheavals of the 20th century”. (Wikipedia) “After prolonged struggles, its representatives produced the Mexican Constitution of 1917. The Revolution is generally considered to have lasted until 1920, although the country continued to have sporadic, but comparatively minor, outbreaks of warfare well into the 1920s. The Cristero War of 1926 to 1929 was the most significant relapse into bloodshed”. (Wikipedia)

Frank Chavez and the Assassination of JFK

My grandfather’s name is Frank Chavez and he was born in Williowbrook, California in 1924. He remembers the assassination of the 35th president John F Kennedy like it was yesterday. He was shot right between his eyes and died “on Friday, November 22, 1963 in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas” while rushed to the hospital “The staff at Parkland Hospital's Trauma Room 1 who treated Kennedy observed that his condition was "moribund” (wikepdia).Kennedy was shot while in a car with his wife( Jacqueline)   and governor of Texas John Connally,. There was a ten-month investigation for his assassination by the F.B.I 1963–1964. The F.B.I said Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated president John F Kennedy but Oswald was killed before trial. Because of Oswald’s death and evidence such the flawed FBI data. Because of the many missing and strange death of witnesses of the assassination of John F Kennedy, many Americans believe in the conspiracy of John F Kennedy assassination. With evidence against the assassination missing or incomplete, we may never know what the cause of the assassination was or if there was a conspiracy. What we do know he was one of the greatest presidents who died to early in his role of president. Who know what he could have done for this country if he remained president.

Pablo

For all the stories that have been told,
I know that your memory will never grow old.
You will always remain in our thoughts,
And you shall forever remain in our hearts.

He was a man whose kindness touched the hearts of many,
And he would often be the first to lend you his last penny.
He loved and cared for all those that he knew,
But now he is gone and there is nothing to do.

We all miss you and hope that you are happy,
Although we will meet again, like the clouds, and the rain.

My Great Grandfather

I have heard numerous stories about my great grandfather, Pablo Nunez, from my mother. He died at the age of 102 as an admirable man whom was liked and looked up to by the whole village due to his nobility. He was born in Nayarit Mexico around the year 1905. For a living, he worked in agriculture, “A variety of products are able to be produced in Nayarit due to its variable geography and climate (Nayarit).”  “During this period, Nayarit enjoyed economic growth due to improvements in transportation and communication. Increased prosperity concentrated in the hands of a few, however, and most of the region’s inhabitants remained poor (Nayarit).” He became wealthy once his second wife died during a miscarriage and left him all her fortune. He bought horses, cows, pigs, goats, chickens, dogs, and stabilized his own plantation of crops in a big location near his house. With his third wife he had twelve kids, three of which he adopted because they were poor and orphans. When ever someone in the village needed help, they would come to him, and he would help out the best he could. Pablo is still remembered for his great actions and the support that he gave to everyone.

My Mother's Story

My mom was on her way to school and she tripped on a rock. She was unconscious for one minute. When she woke up she felt a tickle on her foot and saw a scorpion she tried her best not to move. Since she was breathing fast the scorpion went for the sting and her foot swelled up in seconds. But she tried running home to her mom and when she got there her mom applied a cool compressed sponge and the swelling went down. This was a death situation my mom was in.

My Mom

My mom is from Nayarit, Mix.  The economy of the region is heavily dependent on agriculture. The main crops are corn (maize), beans, sorghum, tobacco, chile, mangos and avocados. There is a modest cattle herd as well as swine and poultry”(Wikipedia) She is about to be 50b yrs old and she’s a person who I know a lot of stories about cause overnight before I go to bed she would tell me stories about when she was and that way ill fall asleep.

She tells me how they didn’t have much in Mexico and made the best living out of the little they had like they wouldn’t have make up so she would get a colored flower and rub it on her cheek for blush. For water she would have to walk to a well and take water out from there also to wash clothes she had to go to a river next to her house and kneel and wash it there, they had cows for milking and freeze it to make cheese.

My mom also told me she would also have to walk a mile of dirt to get to her school and cross a big river and pay a man to take her across. And when it would be flooded she would have to go through a bridge where a train passed risking her life.

She was very polite and happy girl and very sociable and she liked to volunteer in schools and also help people read and write, everything she would learn in school she would teach it to the poor people in her ranch. Till this day I look up to my mom as a strong had working woman.

My Short Story

My uncle was walking down the street while drinking a cup of coffee. He heard people screaming around the corner. He walked towards the screaming and saw people beating up the restaurant owner and his two best friends. They tried to escape and run away but every time they tried they would go back down. The police came and arrested 5 people. My uncle ran away because he thought he would get in trouble thinking he would be blamed for what had happened. He saw a cop car on the corner and he ran but was chased by the police and tackled down by two policemen. He was put in the back seat of the police car. While they were about to drive away about 20 people went up to the car and helped my uncle escaped. The police called for backup but it was too late because they had tilted the police car over. The backup came too late and tried to stop everyone but some people escaped. That fight had turned into a shootout. While my uncle tried to run away he was scraped in the leg by a bullet. He went to the hospital and was cleaned up. After he left the hospital he went to Bell where he found a job.

My Uncle and The Los Angeles Riot of 1992

My uncle was a young wild kid who would always get in trouble everyday. He would always start fights and he would end up badly beaten up. He used to live in south central with his older brothers. They would all get chased by groups of people around the whole city. Luckily he didn’t get caught in one of those groups or he might even been killed. Then in the news they heard about Rodney King getting beat up bad by the LAPD officers. They all joined with some group of people to start a riot. They would start burning up business. “There were a lot of innocent victims killed 50 people killed, 4 thousand injured, 1200 people arrested, and 1 billion in property damage” (Delk). My uncle was crazy during the riot, he would burn things and throw rocks to the police. I thought he was a dangerous person when he told me but I knew he was doing it for freedom and respect. There would be fights everywhere and killing everyday. My uncle was close to death he was stabbed in the stomach. His brothers took him to the hospital quickly. “I’m not afraid of death” said my uncle so everyone thought he was going to die. After he recovered from his injury my uncle went back to the riot and started to do crazy things again. “I won’t stop until racism stops” my uncle said. “For the next three days violence and mayhem continued” (Delk). “Mayor Tom Bradley imposed curfew, schools, and businesses were closed” (Delk). It was one of the dangerous riot in history. After the riot and everything had past my uncle became a history teacher and tells his students of those days.

One of the Greatest Days of My Life

On April 3, 2003, Wrestle Mania 21 took place in Los Angeles, California at the Staples Center. For my brother and I it was just a regular day at our house. Then it all changed with one phone call. My brother had been called by one of his best friends inviting him to this great event.  A couple of hours later we were on our way to the Staples Center. As a boy at the age of 8, I was very excited because I didn’t expect to be doing anything that day.

I was also very excited because that event would soon become memorable. A lot of things happened that day that changed many people’s lives. “Tickets sold out in less than one minute for the event, making it the fastest ticket sell-out in the company's history as well as the fastest ticket sell-out at the Staples Center”(unknown, wikipedia). It felt good to know that I was apart of this. I had a great time not only because this fight became memorable but I also got to shake one of the wrestlers hand. Yo yo man wrestlemania was off the shizzle for rizzle. I would watch it all over again if it came on everyday. Batista and John Cena are the Champs. YEAH BABY!!!!!” writes Stephen Knupp from blogcritics. If I had the chance to live that day again I would because it was my first time going to a wrestling match.

The event drew a Staples Center record attendance of 20,193 people from 14 countries and 48 states and grossed more than $2.1 million in ticket sales, making it the highest grossing WWE event ever at the Staples Center, and the highest grossing of the five Wrestle Manias held in California. In addition to those in attendance, the event was seen by millions of fans in more than 90 countries” (unknown, wikipedia). I was surprised that so many people watch wrestling. I have never seen so many people at the same time. Everybody was cheering and screaming for the wrestlers having a good time. I too was screaming at the top of my lungs.

My Brother
My brother Jesse Flores has always been there for me when I needed him and still is. He is my only source of motivation throughout high school. This is probably due to the fact that he was a cadet in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) federal program to motivate young people to be better citizens. He may seem as if he is not really that important or self determinate but I think he is, so did his sergeant. He was one of the four cadets that had the honor to meet governor of California on June 8, 2007. That same day The Governor held a press conference with Superintendent Brewer and other prominent business persons at Roosevelt to announce the launch of EnCorps Teachers Program, a corporate- sponsored recruiting effort to entice aging baby boomers into teaching. The program is modeled on the Transition to Teaching program launched by IBM in 2005, which includes up to $15,000 in subsidies and other corporate support for departing employees who want to take up teaching. IBM agreed to help support the California EnCorps initiative with technology, expand employment opportunities and encourage Maryland’s baby boomers to engage in community service ([press release]). My brother told me that he was pretty nervous, and when he shook his hand he said he had a very tight grip. They talked about their academics, their current activities in the JROTC program and their future plans in life. It was one of the greatest days of his life, and a great event for Roosevelt High School.

My Great Grandma

My Great Grandmother

My great grandmother's name is Dominga Lozano and she marched with Cesar Chavez. She used to work in the farms picking fruit and vegetables. My uncle told me a story once on how he used to work in construction and upholstery, but he had never been more tired than when he worked in the fields with my great grandma. My grandma lived in Mexicali and would get up at 1:30 in the morning and leave her house before 2 so she could cross the border and be one of the first to be picked, as it was a first come first serve system. The Foremen would only select the amount of workers needed according to the amount of labor scheduled, and only the best were chosen. Needless to say, she was always one of the first workers to get picked. She was only 5 feet tall and would get more work done faster than other 6 foot tall men. She always worked hard and when she heard about Cesar Chavez protesting for the farmers, she also started protesting at her farms. Cesar Chavez lead a group called United Farm Workers (UFW) which wanted higher wages for farmers. When Cesar Chavez had protests away from where she lived, she would travel to where he was protesting and support him. One day when Cesar Chavez was in Fresno she traveled with her sister to Fresno to work in the fields but when his protest began she would leave the fields and go protest. “From the depth of need and despair, people can work together, can organize themselves to solve their own problems and fill their own needs with dignity and strength” (Cesar Chavez). Cesar Chavez once said this quote at one of his first protests in Arizona. He was trying to convince people to stand up for their rights and that united we could make a difference. One time my aunt bought a bowl of grapes and when my great grandma went over that day, she squished the grapes and threw them in the trash. At this time my great grandma was protesting against the consumption of grapes and was very angry when my aunt bought the grapes. On September 8, 1965 Cesar Chavez went on a historical grape strike that started in Delano and ended in Sacramento, California's state capital. The strike lasted 5 years and finally made a difference because the US Senate Committee on Labor agreed to raise wages for farm workers. My mom told me a story that at the end of one day the foremen went out to the fields and picked the workers he needed the next day and told them that they were going to a different farm and had to be out in the fields earlier than usual. The next day my great grandma was suppose to be at work but fell asleep and by the time she got to the farm the bus she was suppose to be on had already theft. The bus that she was suppose to be on was driving next to a canal and rolled over on to the canal. Half of the people that were on the bus didn't make it out of the bus in time and died. One of my great grandmothers friend had taken his two daughters and his son that day and died in the bus. All four of them had died. This is just one story of people protesting and standing up for what they believed in, but this goes to show that if people want change they must stand together, and together they can make a difference.

The Drug Cartel

My father “Francisco Reyes” was born in Michoacán. He then later in his life migrated to the United States. He made a quick business of his life networking with co-workers and friends to establish a small drug business. Also known as a “drug cartel” in technical terms.
Out of the back of his grocery truck business he laid the foundation to a drug trafficking business. He was not a good man nor a trust worthy one, a deceitful awful sum of a person. My parents met at a mid point in each others lives, thirty or so years of age.  It did not take them long to conceive me as his time as my father was short lived due to his fleeing. I was almost burdened with his name if not for his absence at my birth. He stole my mothers’ car at the time of his parting as a gift to add to the whole affair. I do not idolize nor wish to meet the man any time in the near future but do not doubt the day will come when I do.
In many southern American Country’s there are major drug cartels that rule with the power of fear.  Governments are not able to do much due to the corruption within itself and its people.  Drug Cartels grow the supply in the country’s they reside in with little opposition. Then they transport the product through illegal means to country’s such as the U.S. where high profits are made. The nearest country that is exploited is Mexico, south of the Border to us.  There have been many consequences due to the drug war in Mexico. One writer details the devastating effects drugs have had on the growing communities. He says, “The conflict has left thousands dead, paralyzed whole cities with fear, and spawned a culture of corruption reaching the upper levels of the Mexican state” (LA Times Reporter).
Mexico’s government has been attempting to suppress the increasing crime rate because of the cartels after President Felipe Calderon took office in 2006. A reporter state’s, “The official tally provided by the attorney general’s office included data only through September 2011, and it showed that drug-related killings increased 11 percent, to 12,903” (New York Times Reporter). The attempt to make the difference has been made but little has changed. This blood bath has left citizens in fear of their very own neighbors.  Only time will tell if these bands of organized crime dealers will be put to an end by the law or their very own guns.

My uncle told me it started of as a regular morning until all of a sudden he felt the ground shake. At first he thought he was drunk but he remembered he didn’t drink that day. “The event caused between three and four billion USD in damage as 412 buildings collapsed and another 3,124 were seriously damaged in the city” (Mexico City 1985 wiki).  My uncle told me that he went with his uncle to see how the city was affected by the earthquake he said he saw many thing that give him nightmares to this day. He told me that he saw many bodies just lying on the floor. He also said he saw many building laid to rust buildings and offices that once stood tall laid on the floor. He said that he wished that he had never seen all that he saw that even today when he feels a shake on the ground he gets frightened and remembers the day 19 of September 1985.
