Assassination of John F. Kennedy

My Godmother, Lupe has always told me many stories about her life experiences but by far her most emotional story was the day John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. “John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time (18:30 UTC) on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas” (J.F.K).  My Godmother was 19 years old, sitting in her living room with her 7 siblings watching their beloved president waving at the adoring crowd. Lupe and her siblings are cheering along with the crowd when a shot rang out. At first the crowds, both at home and at the scene, were silent.  After a second there was a scream and the sound of a second shot and everything turned to chaos. Back at home Lupe and her siblings sat stunned, not knowing what to do and waited for their mother to come home.
The country went into a state of mourning. My Godmother tells me of the days and weeks after he was killed people would break down and cry whenever J.F.K was mentioned. My Godmother herself cried for the president. People also rallied around in support for the grieving first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.  After the shooting the first lady, who was sitting next to her husband when he was shot, was described at the scene by the governor of Texas. “Mrs. Kennedy then reached out onto the rear trunk lid. After she crawled back into her limousine seat, both Governor Connelly and Mrs. Connelly heard her say more than once, ‘They have killed my husband,’ and ‘I have his brains in my hand.’”(J.F.K) Jacqueline Kennedy became a widow at just 34 but pulled the country together.  She was a pillar of strength for Americans and my Godmother still idolizes her.
The assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy was an American tragedy but in the end brought our nation closer together.
